Rich Communication Services — The Future of Business SMS in India
SMS is text. RCS is an experience.
RCS Business Messaging for Indian enterprises — rich cards with images and action buttons, verified sender branding, interactive carousels, chatbot flows, OTP and transactional alerts, all delivered inside Google Messages on Android — India's default SMS app on 550 million Android devices, with automatic SMS fallback when RCS is unavailable.
Four things to get right when choosing an RCS message service provider for India
Android Reach & RCS Enablement
RCS only works on Android devices with Google Messages enabled as the default SMS app and an active data connection. In India, roughly 65–70% of Android users have RCS-capable devices. SMS fallback coverage fills the remaining 30–35% and iOS users.
RCS rich cards require design templates to be registered with Google. Aggregators with an in-house creative team and Google approval experience get templates live significantly faster than those who pass the work entirely to the client.
When RCS is unavailable, the fallback SMS must fire immediately and be reported separately. Fallback delays of more than 10 seconds cause customer experience problems for time-sensitive OTPs. We test fallback speed before listing.
Unlike SMS, RCS delivers read receipts and button-click tracking at the individual message level. We confirm that every listed aggregator surfaces read rate, button click rate and carousel interaction data in their campaign dashboard.
Every RCS Business Messaging capability an Indian enterprise needs
From a bank sending rich statement cards with Pay Now buttons to an e-commerce brand running interactive product carousel campaigns — find and compare the right RCS message service.
Rich Cards & Image Messages
Send messages with branded headers, product images, descriptive body text and up to three action buttons — Pay Now, Track Order, Call Us — all rendered natively inside Google Messages without any app install from the recipient.
Horizontal scrolling product or offer carousels with multiple rich cards in a single message — each card with its own image, title, description and CTA button. Ideal for e-commerce product recommendations and travel itinerary previews.
Your business name, logo and verified checkmark appear in place of a phone number — recipients see your brand, not an unknown 10-digit number. The RCS aggregator with Google manages Verified Sender Registration directly.
Deliver one-time passwords inside a branded, verified RCS message with auto-copy capability — the OTP is displayed prominently with a copy button so users do not need to switch apps. 40% higher completion rate than SMS OTP in tested deployments.
Build conversational RCS chatbot flows with suggested reply chips and rich card menus — customers tap replies instead of typing, enabling structured FAQ deflection, appointment booking and order status flows directly in Messages.
When a recipient's device does not support RCS (older Android versions, iOS, feature phones), the message automatically falls back to SMS so no message is lost. Fallback is transparent — your campaign reports show both RCS and SMS delivery rates separately.

RCS vs SMS — what actually changes
SMS tells customers what happened. RCS lets them act on it — without leaving the message.
An SMS payment reminder tells a customer their EMI is due. An RCS payment reminder shows them their account name, amount, due date, and a Pay Now button that opens their payment app directly. The customer never leaves the message thread. This single change, adding an action button, is why RCS achieves 3× the click-through rate of SMS for transaction-oriented messages in Indian financial services deployments. No app install, no opt-in to a third-party platform, no URL link to click and trust, just an action button, inside the message, on the device's default messaging app.
Verified sender confirmed — brand name and logo visible without saving the contact
Automatic SMS fallback tested — sub-10-second fallback for time-sensitive OTPs
Read receipts and button-click analytics confirmed at individual message level
Rich card and carousel template Google approval track record reviewed before listing

We help with Google business verification, sender profile setup and rich card template submission — so your first RCS campaign launches without delays. Free from comparison to first message.
We run monthly credit card statement alerts for 2.8 million customers. When we switched from SMS to RCS through Gupshup — found through Telecoms Supermarket's comparison — our payment click-through rate went from 4.1% to 13.8% in the first cycle. The Pay Now button inside the message is what made the difference. Customers do not have to open a browser, find the site, log in. They tap once.

Our Diwali sale campaign used RCS carousels showing five product categories with images and Shop Now buttons. The comparison showed us Route Mobile had the fastest rich card template approval — three days versus eight days quoted by another provider. We hit the campaign window comfortably. RCS CTR was 11.2% versus our historical SMS CTR of 3.4% for comparable promotions. The incremental cost was marginal at our volume.

We were concerned about RCS not reaching iOS users and older Android devices. Telecoms Supermarket's comparison specifically showed SMS fallback test data for each provider. Tanla Pulse fell back to SMS within 4 seconds for non-RCS devices. Our overall campaign reach was 99.7% — 71% via RCS and 28.7% via SMS fallback. The verified brand name alone lifted open rates on the SMS fallback portion by 18%.

RCS Business Messaging for India, explained clearly
Quick answers to common questions about plans, providers, and services for businesses and individuals.
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the next-generation successor to SMS, built into Android's native Messages app. Unlike SMS, it supports images, rich cards, action buttons, read receipts, typing indicators, high-resolution media and suggested replies. Unlike WhatsApp, it requires no app download. An RCS messaging service enables businesses to use verified sender branding, interactive messages and read receipt analytics. Its main limitation is that it works only on supported Android devices, while other users receive SMS fallback.
Around 55–65% of active Android users in India can receive an RCS message, provided they use Google Messages, have RCS enabled by their carrier and have an active data connection. The remaining Android users and all iOS users receive SMS fallback. As a result, businesses can effectively reach their entire audience through a combination of RCS and SMS.
Verified sender registration is completed through an RCS message provider in India or a Google-registered RCS aggregator. Businesses submit their company details, logo and website for verification, after which the provider registers the sender with Google and configures the branded profile. Once approved, recipients see the business name and logo instead of a phone number. Verification typically takes 3–7 working days, and DLT registration is usually completed during onboarding.
A rich card combines an image or video, title, description and up to three action buttons, while a carousel displays multiple rich cards that users can swipe through. These templates must be registered with an RCS message service provider before use. Popular formats include payment reminders, e-commerce promotions and OTP messages with auto-copy functionality.
A business RCS messaging service is priced per message, making it directly comparable to SMS. Although RCS messages typically cost more than SMS, they often deliver higher click-through rates, reducing the overall cost per click for engagement-focused campaigns. High-volume businesses can negotiate lower rates, while SMS fallback messages are billed at standard SMS pricing.
Yes. RCS Business Messaging requires DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) registration under TRAI regulations. Businesses must register their entity, sender IDs and message templates before sending commercial RCS messages. Promotional messages require explicit customer opt-in and must comply with DND rules, while transactional and service messages follow the same consent requirements as SMS. Most providers offering an RCS messaging service also manage DLT registration during onboarding.
