A voice assistant is the software — Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple's Siri — that lives inside a smart speaker or display and responds when you say its wake word. Once set up, you can ask it to play music, set timers and alarms, answer questions, check the weather, add to shopping lists, make calls and, crucially for a smart home, control your other devices: "turn off the bedroom lights," "set the AC to 24," "switch on the geyser." A plain speaker does all this by voice; a display adds a touchscreen for video calls, recipes, photos and camera feeds. Think of it as the hands-free brain that ties your smart devices together and makes them convenient to use.

Both are excellent and, honestly, most people would be happy with either — so the real advice is to pick one and stick with it rather than mixing them. Alexa (Amazon Echo) has the widest range of compatible devices and "skills" and is very popular in India, with frequent offers on Echo hardware. Google Assistant (Nest) tends to answer general knowledge questions a little more naturally and integrates tightly with Google services and Android. Apple's Siri via HomePod suits households already deep in the Apple ecosystem. The reason to commit to one is simple: your speakers determine the assistant your family speaks to, and having Alexa in one room and Google in another is confusing and means routines don't carry across. A smart speaker is cheaper and does everything by voice — perfect for a bedroom, study or as a music speaker. A smart display adds a touchscreen, and that screen genuinely earns its place in some rooms: in the kitchen for following recipes and video calls, by the front door or bedside for glancing at your camera feeds, or anywhere you'd like a digital photo frame that also answers questions. The trade-off is cost and that a screen isn't needed everywhere. A common, sensible setup is one display in the kitchen or living room and cheaper speakers elsewhere. Yes to Hindi and Indian English — both Alexa and Google Assistant handle them well, understand Indian accents reasonably, and support a growing set of other Indian languages, though exactly which languages and how completely does vary, so it's worth confirming your preferred one is well covered before buying. On music, they work with the major services used in India — Spotify, JioSaavn, Gaana, Amazon Prime Music, YouTube Music and others — but the exact line-up differs slightly between Alexa and Google, and you'll usually set a default service in the app. So if you're committed to a particular music app, we check it's supported on the assistant you're leaning towards, so "play my playlist" just works from day one.

Smart speakers listen locally for their wake word — "Alexa," "Hey Google" — and only start sending audio to the cloud once they think they've heard it; they're not meant to be recording everything, but the microphone is always on, which understandably makes some people uneasy. There are good controls. Every device has a physical mute button that electrically disconnects the mic, useful during private conversations. You can review your voice history in the app and set it to auto-delete after a period, or delete it manually, and you can turn off human review of recordings.
