Azure ExpressRoute gives you a dedicated, private connection from your premises or data centre to Microsoft Azure (and to Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365), instead of going over the public internet. That means more consistent latency, higher and more reliable bandwidth and stronger security. In India it's most commonly delivered through a Microsoft Azure Express Provider or ExpressRoute connectivity partner that provides the circuit and last-mile. 

Over the public internet, traffic to Azure is best-effort with variable latency. A site-to-site VPN adds encryption over that same internet path, but performance still depends on the internet. ExpressRoute is a private, dedicated circuit that bypasses the internet entirely — the most consistent and secure option. Many businesses run ExpressRoute with a VPN as backup for resilience.

Azure operates India regions including Central India (Pune), South India (Chennai) and West India (Mumbai), and ExpressRoute peering locations in India let you connect privately into them. With Microsoft peering, ExpressRoute can also carry Microsoft 365 and Azure PaaS traffic, and Global Reach can link your on-prem sites. The right peering location depends on where your sites and workloads are — confirm current specifics with the partner.
